Feel empowered by English pronunciation tools and musical expression
WHERE MUSIC MEETS LANGUAGE
Minimize English-speaking pronunciation challenges through targeted sounds and vocal expression
Learn English Through Singing The Sharkey Method™ (LETS) online classes is a great alternative to in-person classes and they run very similar. You are still taught sounds the same way, you still have pictorial visuals, videos, as well as personalized instruction showing you exactly how your mouth needs to move based on demonstrations through singing. The resources from the in-person classes are incorporated into the online classes to make activities and practice engaging, and you still target the same goals. All the learning material can be accessed online wherever you may be, to ensure your pronunciation goals are easily accessible at all times. The target goals in LETS are still provided in a detail-oriented and specific manner so that you can walk away from the online class feeling confident of what you have just learnt and how to implement it.
LETS is offered online weekly over 11 weeks during either the fall, winter or spring term by the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association in collaboration with Global Gathering Place. Registration is completed through Global Gathering Place. For more information contact [email protected].
Engaging Online English Classes: A Testimonial from Global Gathering Place
"Learn English Through Singing the Sharkey Method™ (LETS) has been an engaging class for our Global Gathering Place (GGP) clients to learn English in an enjoyable way. This class is offered online, so our participants can join the lesson from the comfort of their own homes. This is extremely helpful during Saskatchewan winters, because participants are sometimes unable to attend classes in person. The waitlist for many of our clients to get into an English class has been quite long, and some of our clients end up waiting for up to a year. The LETS program is delivered by Maura Sharkey-Pryma, and is a great option for clients to have the chance to practise their English while waiting to get accepted into an English class.
While many other English programs focus on grammar and vocabulary, this English class has a large focus on pronunciation, including how to position the lips and tongue to make certain sounds in English. The course offers an interactive way to learn English in a judge-free zone, where clients practise sounds by singing consonants and by learning different songs. This class is important for our clients because Maura does a great job at explaining how to make certain sounds, such as “th,” “y,” or “l.” She understands that many people may not have had to make these sounds in their first language and may struggle with knowing how to position their tongue and lips. Maura is very animated and encouraging, and she helps our participants feel comfortable in a situation that might be very intimidating.
Participants expressed how sad they were when the course finished, and many asked when it would be offered again. One client shared, “My thanks to Maura and her method of teaching English through songs, which allowed me to be more aware of the need to improve my pronunciation and try to do so when I am speaking. Particularly, I really enjoyed the classes because Maura's enthusiasm and the dynamics used, which allows the student to make the teaching-learning process successful and enjoyable. Additionally, I feel that my pronunciation is more fluid and more understandable.”
