INNOVATIVE PRONUNCIATION
Meet Maura Sharkey-Pryma
Maura Sharkey-Pryma is the innovative creator of Learn English Through Singing The Sharkey Method™ (LETS). She is an expert singing voice specialist and instructor with a passion for helping English language learners feel confident in their pronunciation and supporting them in their journey towards English language fluency.
In the fall of 2020 during the COVID global pandemic and subsequent lockdown, Maura was approached by MacEwan University’s Conservatory of Music under the School of Continuing Education to develop and teach a new online course for the Conservatory and MacEwan’s English as an Additional Language (EAL) program. The concept: instruct Canadian newcomers in their English pronunciation through singing.
Immediately intrigued by this project, Maura felt a personal connection with it as her own mother immigrated to Canada in the late 1960's from the Philippines as a young woman. Her mother would recount stories of her early experiences as a new Canadian, and the challenge in improving her English pronunciation.
A singing voice specialist with over 25 years teaching experience and a vocal instructor at MacEwan University's Theatre Arts Department in Musical Theatre Performance, Maura has accumulated years of experience working closely with diction and articulation. Along with a professional performance background as a vocal soloist in operas and concerts, LETS was a perfect fit for her.
Therefore, Learn English Through Singing The Sharkey Method™ was born. Inspired by somatic vocal training and performance, informed by English as an Additional Language pronunciation, and created to help English language learners feel confident through the power of music.
